Coventry Youth Activists call for allies new and old to join first online gathering

A Coventry Youth Activists (CYA) Ally Gathering is no ordinary meeting – it’s an opportunity to learn, connect and take action. Together.

Our team of campaigners, fighting for young disabled people’s right to a good life, are inviting YOU to join them online on Friday 27 September (10am to 11:30am) for their first ever Ally Gathering.

Six disabled people, two in wheelchairs at the front, stand on grass and smile as one uses a megaphone to shout out their message.
CYA is a campaign group changing young people’s lives in Coventry and beyond.

They want to amplify the message that online disability hate and ableism has no place in our society. They believe that community and allyship have the power to create real change.

“By joining us, you’re not just supporting a cause – you’re standing up for dignity, respect, and equality for everyone,” say the activists.

One of our activists Thomas has written a blog with five reasons why you SHOULD NOT MISS this event. Read his blog here.

And there’s also a second blog from the team on why they need more allies.

The sad fact is that as a marginalised community, it is often the voices of allies that are heard more loudly than those of disabled people themselves. If you are an ally who could help amplify disabled people’s voices, their words become harder to ignore.

More on allyship with disabled people here, including how to sign up to receive a free Ally Pack designed by CYA to help guide you as you stand up for others.

And don’t forget to grab your free ticket for the Ally Gathering on 27 September here.

Whether in a personal or professional capacity, as a disabled person or an ally, CYA would love to have you there.

In other news: CYA meet Ofcom for round two of Online Safety Act consultation

CYA welcomed Ofcom again in July for part two of their consultation with local disabled young people on the government’s Online Safety Act.

This time, CYA brought in a broader range of experiences and ideas from teenagers taking part in our 12-month Teenvine Plus programme for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

CYA and Ofcom in July.

Part of a series of national consultations by Ofcom to help inform their future implementation of the new regulations, July’s conversation focused on content that is harmful to children.

We had some difficult but important conversations – fortunately, those present felt CYA and Ofcom created the right conditions to be able to share.

Heidi told us: “It was a safe space where I was able to share my thoughts on my experiences of online disability hate.”

Another young person said: “It was really important for Ofcom to get an understanding of what it is like for young people online.”

Members of CYA were proud to have facilitated the conversation, bringing those implementing new policies to the young people they hope will benefit.
